Imagine a city filled with timeless, utilitarian bicycles with their own special charm. That city is Amsterdam.

- The same basic design since before WWII, except this frame looks aluminum.
- Sparta also makes a ladies model, this one in mint green.
- Put a basket on that front rack and add panniers and you’re ready to carry anything.
- This one might actually be from WWII, or at least the 1950s.
- Amsterdam-based Workcycles makes a modern version of the utility workhorses.
- There were few lightweight step-throughs, like this Batavus in classic lugged steel.
- You can also buy classic Dutch bikes embellished with floral patterns.
- Or with newsprint from the Dutch fashion pages.
- At the Van Gogh museum, you could buy one inspired by his Sunflowers painting.
- Or inspired by his many paintings of fruit trees in bloom.
- But my favorites were the cargo bikes for carrying the kinderen.
- Most of the cargo bikes had rain covers to protect the little ones.
- As well as utility covers to protect from rain when stored outside.
- Some cargo bikes had enough space for quadruplets.
- I loved this one so much I had to take another shot.
If you could bring one of these bikes back to the States, which would you choose?
