Bike Commute Diaries: Taking the Sidewalk

15 May

I have a dirty little secret. I ride my bike on the sidewalk sometimes. It’s not my fault, really. I blame the transportation engineers who didn’t consider bikes when they designed the roads. I only do it for short stretches when there’s no safe alternative, and I slow down or stop for walkers. Please don’t judge me.

I do it also. There really isn’t a clean way to get between Market St and Civic Center in SF without riding a sidewalk. One of the gaps they need to fix.

Heh. The magic camera caught me riding on the sidewalk just last night while I shot my 1st Street detour video. Evidence here http://youtu.be/ezAie_IaXP0

Its a way of life here in the UK, there are very few places that will prosecute & most new sidewalks are designated for pedestrians & cycles together anyway.

Nearly 32,000 Americans die in car crashes annually. 80% of car crashes are PREVENTABLE. If the TOASTER was killing that many people we'd think it was ridiculous. We'd un-plug it and say, let's Fix The Toaster.
