Bike Commute Diaries: Weekly Grocery Run

13 May

When I first grocery shopped by bike I’d grab a hand basket so I wouldn’t buy more than I could comfortably carry. Now that I have a Dutch bike with oversized bags and a front rack, I grab a full-sized grocery cart and buy whatever I want. It always works out, even for bigger trips like this four bag, 40 pound load.

About the Bike Commute Diaries: In honor of National Bike Month, I’m sharing 31 short, sweet and surprising things I’ve discovered about bike commuting, one for each day in May. Happy National Bike Month!

So I’m looking for an “urban bicycle”. Where’s a good place or source to find a bike that’s both lovely and fit for around town?

Hi Jennifer! Since you live in the Mountain View area, I’d stop first at A Street Bike Named Desire in Town & Country Village in Palo Alto. I also visit 359 State Street in Los Altos to check out the Linus bikes. My newest bike is made by Public Bikes. They have their headquarters in San Francisco where you can test ride their bikes in the scenic South Park circle. It’s about 1/2 mile from Caltrain. Trek and Specialized also have good city bikes these days, so you may find something at Mikes Bikes or Bicycle Outfitter. There are a lot of options these days.
