Volkswagen Bug Unloading

On the southbound side there's a relatively narrow parking lane and a door zone bike lane.

That isn’t a bike lane, it’s a liability for the municipality. This does NOT fit any recommendations as to where bicycle lanes should be installed. Where that man’s outside heel is should be the START of the bike lane if there were space. The bike lane needs a buffer zone–3 feet of hashed do-not-ride-in area would keep people safe. If a cyclist rides in this zone and gets “doored” because the city irresponsibly painted this lane, or if the cyclist swerves to miss the opening door and a car hits them, it could be incredibly tragic and the city would see major legal repercussions, rightfully so. If there is refusal to remove the parking and narrow the main traffic lanes, these bicycle lanes NEED TO GO. Lay down SHARROWS until there is enough political will to get the parking removed.

I agree Daniel, that door zone bike lanes are dangerous. Unfortunately, AASHTO doesn’t. Their guidelines for curbside parking + a bike lane are a mere 12 feet. http://www.bicyclinginfo.org/engineering/facilities-bikelanes.cfm
