Bike Commute Diaries: Change is Good

10 Jan

I missed the train today. After years of doing the “same old, same old” you think you have it all dialed in. Then something screws up your routine and you react like the grumpy curmudgeons that you roll your eyes at during City Council meetings. Change is good. This change is good. I just need to tweak my routine.

About the Bike Commute Diaries: Launched in May 2012 for National Bike Month, this series explores the unexpected and surprising things I’ve seen and learned while bicycling for transportation.

I’d like to see the signals at that intersection revised: flashing yellow and red only. Make it uncontrolled unless pedestrians hit the walk button, then all phases (except pedestrian) red. I’d bet latency would improve without loss of throughput.

Surely you jest. No one in cars would ever be able to cross Central in that case. Or is that your evil plan. Bwwwaaaahaha!

Is this the Castro intersection where you cross the Caltrain tracks?

Yup, they changed it to let both directions go straight before left turns. Not sure if it is then both go left, or if it is sensor activated. Should make it a lot easier for people driving from 101 or all the north bay shore tech jobs to get to all the new expensive villa housing.

So far they’ve only changed the order: southbound from Moffett to Castro goes before northbound from Castro to Moffett now. They will be changing it from a 3-way signal to left turns first, then straight before too long. But they haven’t done that yet. It requires restriping to remove the combined left/straight lane from northbound Castro to Moffett.

Fix The Toaster

Nearly 32,000 Americans die in car crashes annually. 80% of car crashes are PREVENTABLE. If the TOASTER was killing that many people we'd think it was ridiculous. We'd un-plug it and say, let's Fix The Toaster.
