Bike Commute Diaries: The Elevator Pitch

05 Sep

One of the most basic marketing messages is the elevator pitch: your story, succinct enough for a 30 second elevator ride. Almost every morning, the elevator at work gives me a chance to hone my pitch. Co-worker: “Where did you ride in from?” Me: “From the train station downtown. It’s only a few miles away on the river trail, so it’s easy and relaxing.” Co-worker: “Oh yeah, the river trail is really close. Maybe I’ll try it this weekend.”

About the Bike Commute Diaries: Launched in May 2012 for National Bike Month, this series explores the unexpected and surprising things I’ve learned about bicycling for transportation.

Our building forces us through the freight elevator :(

When I asked about parking my bike in the office, my company’s facilities guy said yes, but use the freight elevator. I did for a couple of weeks, then one day at lunch I walked into the main elevator by accident and never went back. The elevator is plenty big for me, the bike and 2-3 other people.

Both the building maintenance and my company’s facilities guy have seen me use the main elevator and never said anything.

Fix The Toaster

Nearly 32,000 Americans die in car crashes annually. 80% of car crashes are PREVENTABLE. If the TOASTER was killing that many people we'd think it was ridiculous. We'd un-plug it and say, let's Fix The Toaster.
